Terminologies in Introduction to Pharmacology Flashcards
(20 cards)
What is the study of drugs and their interaction with living things which encompasses the physical, chemical properties, biochemical and physiologic effects?
Pharmacology
What is the study of drugs in humans for patients and healthy volunteers?
Clinical Pharmacology
This is the use of drugs to diagnose, prevent or treat disease
Pharmacotherapeutics
It is any chemical that can affect living processes
Drug
This is one of the properties of an ideal drug which is a drug that elicits the responses for which it is given.
Effectiveness
A drug that cannot produce harmful effects even if administered in very high doses and for a very long time
Safety
A drug that elicits only the response for which it is given
Selectivity
A drug actions that subside within an appropriate time
Reversible Action
A drug that we can know with certainty how a given patient will respond
Predictability
A drug that is given conveniently with low needed doses
Ease of Administration
An ethical consideration which treated as independent persons capable of making decisions in their own best interests, the right to self-determination
Respect for Persons/ Autonomy
It is the duty to protect research subjects from harm
Beneficence
An ethical consideration that requires that the selection of research subjects be fair
Justice
It describes the drug’s chemical structure.
Chemical name
This is the official, nonproprietary name, not owned by any company, and universally accepted.
Generic name
This is the proprietary name, chosen by the drug company and registered as trademark.
Trade/Brand name
These are the drugs found to be safe and appropriate for use without direct supervision of the HCP. It may also be purchased without a prescription.
Over The Counter Drugs (OTC)
Also known as compliance and is defined as the extent to which a patient’s behavior coincides with medical advice
Patient Adherence
The study of the movement of the drug throughout the body. It is derived from two greek words “Pharmakon” means drug and “kinesis” means motion
Pharmacokinetics
It reduces the amount of active drug available to exert pharmacologic effects
First Pass Effect
