What is Catharsis?
The purification of the soul through the release of emotions -specifically pity and fear.
Used in an Aristotelian Tragedy
What is peripeteia?
The reversal of fortune out of the protagonists favour in an Aristotelian tragedy
What is anagnoresis?
The moment of realisation in which the protagonist realises their fatal flaw too late in an Aristotelian Tragedy
What is hamartia?
The protagonists fatal flaw- often an error in judgement
What is hubris?
An excess of pride in the Tragic Protagonist which often causes them to be blinded to their hamartia
What is the denouement?
The conclusion at the end of a tragedy drawing together what is to be learned from the plot
What is catastrophe?
Something terrible which happens to the protagonist
What is a foil?
A character who contrasts with another in a tragedy
