Terminology Flashcards
Agent:
Agent refers to extinguishing material
Arson:
The willful and malicious burning of another’s property; stipulated within state criminal code as 1st degree arson 609.051
Automatic Alarm, AKA:
“Box Alarm”
Backdraft (AKA):
Condition that results from a vent-limited fire, that may explode with the sudden addition of oxygen. AKA: Smoke Explosion
Back Pressure (Head Pressure) pressure per foot of elevation:
0.434psi per foot of elevation
*** Add 5psi per floor in hi-rise ops to account for this
Combustible:
A material or structure that ignites and burns at temps ordinarily encounter at fires
Combustion:
A chemical reaction, often described as the “fire tetrahedron” that requires fuel, oxygen and heat and then a chemical reaction
Fire Front:
Typically the predominant fire location, often when the attack line is laid
Fire Point:
Temp at which a given material will give off flammable gases that will sustain combustion
Fire Stream:
Used to describe the shape, flow, and pressure of water to effectively control a fire
Flashover:
A rapid, near-simultaneous ignition of most combustible materials in an enclosed space due to extreme heat
Flash Point:
The lowest temp at which a liquid or solid release enough vapor to ignite when mixed with air
Flow (Residual) Pressure:
Pressure shown at the suction gauge after water has been placed in motion
Fire Under Control:
Past test question
A radio call and station journal entry to indicate the time a fire can be said to be extinguished, with all searches completed
Halligan:
Named after a Deputy Chief from FDNY in the 1940’s and AKA: the “Hooligan”
Incipient Stage:
Initial stages of a fire
‘Light Water’
3M trade name for AFFF
- In 1% doses for Class A fires
LEL:
Lower Explosive Limit:
- Natural Gas: 5-15% in air
- MFD monitors alarm at 10% of the LEL
Master Stream:
- ______gpm or more
Usually described as any line/device delivering 350gpm or more
Lugging:
Engine overloading from failure to get efficient engine speeds
NIMS
National Incident Management System
- Local, State and Federal
Nozzle Reaction:
As water leaves the nozzle under pressure, it causes a force in the opposite direction
NPU Nozzle:
Navy Pick-up Nozzle, used with foam
Oxygen Deficiency:
Air with less than 19.5% oxygen
