Abscess
A swollen, inflamed area where pus gathers.
Bacteria
Single-celled microorganisms with one of three basic shapes: rod-like (bacilli), spherical (cocci) and spiral (spirilla).
Caffeine
A bitter-tasting, water-soluble compound that acts as a central nervous system stimulant and has a mild diuretic (increasing urination) effect
Dacryocystitis
Inflammation of the sac that collects tears for drainage from the eye.
Ecchymosis
A collection of blood in the tissues causing a black and blue, or yellow, area.
Fallopian tube
The tubal passageway connecting the ovary to the uterus.
Galactosemia
A disease present at birth caused by a genetic lack of an enzyme needed to metabolize galactose into glucose
Hallucination
The sensory perception of sights, sounds or objects that don’t really exist.
Ichthyosis
An inherited skin disorder that produces dry, rough, scaly skin.
Jejunum
The middle part of the small intestine, located between the duodenum and ileum.
Keloid
Excessive growth of scar tissue on the skin.
Labyrinth
The system of interconnecting canals and cavities in the inner ear.
Macula
The central part of the retina with the highest density of light receptors. Responsible for detailed vision.
Nausea
A feeling of sickness in the stomach, sometimes followed by the urge to vomit.
Obsessive-compulsive
Marked by a need to repeatedly perform certain behaviors or rituals.
Palate
The roof of the mouth.
Rad
Radiation absorbed dose. A unit of measurement of the absorbed dose of ionizing radiation.
Saccharin
A compound that’s hundreds of times sweeter than table sugar. Used as an artificial sweetener.
Tachypnea
Rapid breathing.
Ulcerative colitis
A chronic inflammatory disease of the large intestine characterized by bloody diarrhea.
Vaccine
A preparation of killed or weakened microorganisms, given to treat or prevent disease.
Wheal
A pimple or small itchy elevation of the skin caused by an allergen.
Yellow fever
An acute viral illness spread by mosquito bites. Characterized by fever and jaundice.
Zygote
A fertilized ovum (egg).
