Peer review definition?
Scrutiny of research by independent experts
Why bother peer reviewing?
- Make sure opinions are unbiased of the quality/validity of the research
- prevent false resulted influencing society
What is standardisation?
When the conditions and procedure of a study is exactly the same for every participant - making it repeatable
Example of a research technique?
Observation &self reports
A research method?
Experiments and correlation
what is standard deviation?
the average amount that the scores differ from the mean
-the larger the standard deviation the more the data is spread out
what is reliability?
the extent to which fin dinging have been related with similar results
=consistency
whats inter-rater reliability and test re test reliability?
inter rater - the rating/interviews/observation is observed by another researcher and the scores are compared to test how similar they are
test re test-when the test is done again on the SAME sample of participants
how can you improve reliability?
- standardised instructions
- operationalise the variables
- pilot studies
what is validity?
is the research measuring what it set out to measure
what is face and concurrent validity?
Face validity-the extent to which a measure appears on the surface to be measuring what it set out to measure
concurrent validity-the way of assessing validity by comparing in to the results of another relevant study
what is a case study?
in depth studies of an individual or a small group of individuals regarding a topic of interest to the researcher
what is an operationalised variable?
one that effects the dependent variable and varies systematically with the independent variable
