Test #1: Scientific Method/Motion nad Momentum Flashcards
(29 cards)
What is the difference between distance and displacement?
Distance is how far you travel, Displacement is the shortest distance between the starting point and the ending point WITH a direction.
What is instantaneous speed?
Speed at one specific moment of time. Looking at a speedometer tells you your instantaneous speed.
On a distance-time graph, what does a horizontal line mean?
No change in position has occurred. The object is not moving.
How are speed and velocity different?
Velocity of an object is the SPEED, but it also includes a direction whereas speed is just distance traveled divided by the time it takes to travel that distance.
What does the slope of two lines on a distance-time graph tell you?
Relative speed. The steeper the line, the greater the speed.
Speeding up, slowing down, and changing directions are all examples of ______________.
Acceleration
If a race car is driving around a track at a constant speed, is it accelerating? Why or why not?
Yes. Even though it is not speeding up or slowing down, it is changing directions around the track. Therefore, the race car is accelerating.
What is the relationship between mass and inertia?
The more mass an object has, the more inertia it has.
What two things affect the momentum of an object?
Mass and Velocity
Define Inertia
The tendency of an object to resist a change in it’s motion. In other words, if an object is moving, it wants to continue moving at the same speed in the same direction. If an object is at rest, it wants to stay at rest. Inertia is the reason we should wear seatbelts in a vehicle.
What are the steps of the scientific method?
Ask a question/Define Problem State Hypothesis Test Hypothesis/Experiment Analyze Data Draw Conclusions
Qualitative Data
Data you collect with your senses. It might include color (the liquid was blue), how something feels (the substance was sticky), if something has an odor (the sample smelled fruity.)
In order for something to have momentum it must…
be moving
What lab instrument would you use to find out the mass of an object?
A balance
A graduated cylinder is utilized for measuring…
volume
Before using a balance, you must first make sure it is
zeroed. (Remember there is a little knob underneath the balance that you turn to make it level before you start!)
The following are all examples of: m/s km/hr yds/min mph cm/yr
Speed
True or False: Gravity helps determine your mass?
False. Mass does not change according to location. Weight, however does. Your weight on the moon and your weight on earth are different because of the pull of gravity.
Explain what a car is doing if it’s acceleration is -3.5 mi/hr/sec
The car is slowing down.
If I wanted to know an object’s velocity, I would need to know 2 things. What are they?
How fast the object is going and in what direction the object is moving.
Explain how to use a graduated cylinder.
Get eye level.
If the liquid is clear, place a colored piece of paper behind the cylinder to make it easier to see.
Read the level from the bottom of the meniscus (the curve of the liquid).
Mass measures…
The amount of matter in an object
If an object’s speed decreases, what happens to its momentum?
Momentum is mass x velocity. Since velocity and speed are the same thing (except direction), if the object’s speed decreases momentum decreases also.
A change in speed per a unit of time is….
Acceleration
