Test 1 (Slides) Flashcards
What does Diastole mean?
The relaxation phase (62%)
What does Systole mean?
The contraction phase (38%)
What does Cardiac Output mean?
Total volume of blood pumped by the ventricles every minute
What does Stroke volume mean?
The amount of blood ejected by the ventricles per beat
What does Ejection fraction mean?
The fraction of blood pumped out by the LV, in relation to the pre - contraction volume
Three effects of cardiac output?
Preload
Contractility
After-load
What is Preload?
The stretch of the cardiac muscle fibres.
The greater the stretch the greater the force of contraction.
What is Contractility?
The strength of the contraction at a given preload
What is after-load?
The flow resistance pressure that must be overcome the cause the aortic / semilunar valve to open
What is the Fick principle?
Oxygen consumption is dependent on blood flow to that tissue and the amount of oxygen extracted from the blood by the tissue.
Myocardial Adaptations
Stroke volume
improving performance and cardiac dimensions
Peripheral Vascular adaptions
Increased Pre-load
Decreased after-load
-Allows maximal cardiac output to increase
‒Increase capillary bed of skeletal muscle
‒Increased maximal vascular conductance.
What is Detraining?
The partial or complete loss of training-induced adaptations, in response to an insufficient training stimulus.
What is the Fick equation
A-vo2diff = Vo2 / Q x 100
