test Flashcards
field
a region of empty space around an object that is being influenced by a force emitted from that object
electric field
caused by charging objects
ex. if you hold up a charged balloon next to your hair, it will stand up on end
magnetic field
can exert force on other magnets of electric fields that enter the space around the magnet
the earths magnetic field is thought to come from:
electric currents originating deep within the planet
gravitational field
a mass experiencese a force
electric
either positive or negative charged
test bodies:
small charges objects
ex. power lines
magnetic
either magnets or electric currents
test bodies:
small magnets such as compass needles
ex.
fridge magnet
earths poles
gravitational
have mass
text bodies:
small objects with mass
ex.
earth
moon
sun
motors
convert electrical to mechanical energy
Ee -> Em
generator
convert mechanical to electrical energy
aka kinetic or motion (Ek)
Em -> Ee
electrical energy
the energy made available by the movement of change
Ee
mechanical energy
the energy of motion, or the energy of an object that moves
Em
armature
-made up of a coil of wire
-the part of the motor that actually spins
commutator
-allows the electricity from an outside force to flow into the armature
-two types, split ring and slip ring
brushes
-connected to the electricity source
-in contact with the commutator
shaft
-everything is attached along the shaft, which spins
magnet
-there needs to be an outside magnetic field to interact with the magnetic field of the wires
series connections
-components are arranged one after another
-the electric current has only one path to follow
advantages of series connections
-allow for greater power source
disadvantages of series connections
-if one component malfunctions, every component will fail to work
parallel connections
-components are arranged parallel to each other
advantages of parallel connections
-won’t draw as much power (e.g. batteries will last longer)
-if one component fails the rest of the circuit will continue to funcrion
disadvantages of parallel connections
-voltage is more limited
-if you want to shut down the circuit, you have to shut off each component individually
wavelength
-refers to the distance required for 1 complete cycle (crest + trough)
-can also be the distance between a point on the wave and the same point on the next wave
