Explain the creation of spits through longshore drift
LSD transports sand and other sediments in zigzag motions before depositing it in the shallow areas of the coast. Due to friction along sea bed, reducing wave energy. This creates a long sand structures, jutting out of the sea called spits.
Explain the creation of bars after spits through longshore drift
Longshore drift also causes a spit to grow across a bay, trapping a lagoon behind creating a bar.
What are groynes and costs and advantages
HE structures built down the beach at right angles to the coastline, trapping sediment from longshore drift. This helps create a wide beach, making it more popular tourists. Further more. This helps the local economy. However, grins are only effective in the area placed as it creates a buffer zone how it can lead to an increased rate of erosion along the coast due to long show drift
What are sea walls costs and advantages
They are concrete or rock barriers placed at the foot of cliff with curved structures, reflecting the wave back at the sea. This helps the sea from eroding the cliff as the waves are just deflected back. However, sea walls are very expensive and look unnatural.
Attrition
Suspension
What’s the benefits and drawbacks of protecting homes from flooding? FLOOD SCHEME
Increases the local quality of life since they are not forced to migrate, however, flood management schemes can be expensive in increasing the economic cost to build and maintain floods channels
What are embankments pros and cons
Embankments are raised banks built along the sides of a river to stop it from overflowing. Manage flood risks since they use the mud over ledger from the river which is cheaper and more sustainable. However it can fail and cause flooding downstream
Describe meanders formations
Meanders form in the middle and lower courses of a river due to lateral erosion. On the outside of the bend, the water flows faster with more energy, causing erosion through hydraulic action and abrasion. On the inside, the water is slower, leading to deposition and the formation of a slip-off slope. Over time, these processes increase the meander’s curve.
The use of photographs for human geography
Question
How successful has the regeneration of Gloucester Quays been?
To visually record changes in buildings, public spaces and improvement of infrastructures. Visual photos provide easy evidence of regeneration and easy to compare areas of Gloucester keys with before and after
Effectiveness of measuring channel width, depth and velocity
Question
How Blackpool Brook changes downstream?
Provides quantitative data showing how the brook size and flow changes downstream and is used to understand processes like erosion and deposition. As the brook moved downstream, the width and depth increased, and so did the velocity. This suggests more erosion downstream.
Effectiveness of observations
Observing rocks was an effective qualitative method because it gave clear visual evidence of erosion and transportation processes along Blackpool Brook. By comparing the size, shape, and roundness of rocks at each site, we could identify how attrition and erosion increased downstream. This method was quick and only recquired judgment.
