Where is insulin produced?
beta cell of the islet of Langerhans in the pancreas
What is the average basal rate of insulin for adults?
18-40 units per day
What are the two primary functions of insulin?
Promote glucose transport from the blood into the cell
Facilitate the storage of glucose as glycogen
(also, inhibits the breakdown of stored glucose from protein & fat stores in the body)
What is the treatment for hypoglycemia?
Immediate intake of simple carbohydrates (glucose or Dextrose) by PO or IV routes depending on LOC & safety
What are symptoms of hypoglycemia?
cold, clammy skin/ diaphoresis/ pallor
Rapid heartbeat
anxiety
Hunger
Headache
Nervousness, tremors
Slurred speech
Vision changes
Changes in LOC
Seizures/ come
What are causes of hypoglycemia?
alcohol intake without food (alcohol inhibits glycogenolysis)
too little food
Too much diabetic medication
Too much exercise without food
What is the goal for diabetes treatment?
Tight glucose control –> will help prevent long-term complications
