Flashcards in Test Ch-13, 15 Deck (40)
Why do cells reproduce?
Cells reproduce so organs can grow larger.
what are the stages of mitosis?
What happens during interphase?
Interphase is the stage that the cell is not dividing. At this stage the cell is getting ready for mitosis to occur.
- DNA replication occurs
What happens during prophase?
- Chromosomes appear as pairs.
- Nuclear membrane starts to break down.
What happens during metaphase?
- Chromosomes line up in the middle of the cell.
- Spindle fibres attach to the centromere of the chromosome.
What happens during anaphase?
- Chromosomes are pulled apart by spindle fibres.
- They are moved to opposite ends of the cell.
What happens during telophase?
- Nuclear membrane forms around the chromatids.
- Centrioles disappear.
What happens during cytokinesis?
- Cell becomes 2 daughter cells.
- Both contain 46 chromosomes.
What is a chromatid?
A chromatid is when a chromosomes duplicates and becomes two strands.
What is mitosis about?
Mitosis is about the production of body cells only.
What is mitosis?
Division of the nucleus.
What is G1 phase?
First growth phase; during this phase cell produces new proteins. The phase ends when cell's DNA starts to duplicate.
What is S phase?
During this phase DNA molecules in the cell nucleus form duplicates of themselves.
What is G2 phase?
Is a short phase, involves preparation for cell division.
What is M phase?
The cell divides into two daughter cells.
What are the ovaries?
Are the female sex organ.
What happens in the ovaries?
Eggs are produced.
What is ovulation?
The release of an egg.
What is ZEF
Where is sperm produced from?
Sperm is produced from the testes.
What is the skin - covered pouch called covering the testes?
What does the urethra carry?
Urine and sperm.
Why does erectile tissue have sponge-like spaces?
Blood fills these spaces when the male is sexually aroused.
What does the uterus do?
Is a single hollow organ.
What do the two seminal vesicles do?
Secrete fluid that makes 60% of the semen.
What does the prostate gland do?
Secretes a fluid which is part of the semen.
What does the bulbo-urethral glands do?
Two glands secrete clear mucus just before ejaculation occurs.
What does the scrotum do?
A skin-covered pouch that holds the testes.
What do the testes do?
Primary male reproductive system, they produce sperm.
