Test Revision - Joint Types Flashcards
(20 cards)
What is the effect of a loosely fitted joint?
Great range of movement but are weaker/prone to dislocation
What is the effect of a tightly fitted joint?
Strong joint, generally very little movement
How are joints classified?
- Functional Classification: Range of movement
- Structural Classification: Type of connective tissue that binds the bones together
What are the types of joints?
- Fibrous/fixed joints
- Cartilaginous/Slightly movable joints
What is a fibrous joint?
When no movement occurs between the bones because they’re held in place by fibrous connective tissue
- Very difficult to damage as it’s strong
Example of fibrous joint
- Between teeth and jaw
- Sutures of the skull
What is a cartilaginous joint?
Held in place by cartilage which allows slight movement to occur
Example of cartilaginous joint
- Joints between adjacent vertebrae
- Joints between the ribs
What is a synovial joint?
Joints that are freely movable, with the amount of movement limited by ligaments, muscles, tendons and adjoining bones.
Example synovial joint
The knee joint where the femur meets the tibia
What is a ball & socket joint?
When spherical head of one bone fits into a cup-like cavity of another.
What is a hinge joint?
Allow movement in one plane only. Convex surface fits into concave surface.
What is a pivot joint?
Rounded, pointed, conical end of bone articulates with a ring, formed partly by bone and ligament
What is a gliding joint?
Movement in any direction side to side/ back to forth motion, restricted only by ligaments or bony processes surrounding joint.
What is a condyloid joint?
One surface of bone slightly convex that fits into slightly concave depression in another.
Provide an example of the ball & socket joint
Head of humerus fits into depression in scapula
Provide an example of the hinge joint
Elbow and knee
Provide an example of the pivot joint
Joint between 1st vertebra. Head is balanced (atlas) and 2nd vertebra (axis)
Provide an example of the gliding joint
Between carpal bones
Provide an example of the condyloid joint
Between radius and carpal bones
