Test for carbonate

A

With dilute hydrochloric acid, carbonates fizz as they release carbon dioxide. Can test for carbon dioxide with limewater

Test for sulfate

A

Add dilute HCl (get rid of carbonates that would also give positive test) and add barium chloride, barium sulfate white precipitate forms.

Dip wire into mixture and hold in hot flame
