Tests For Ions Flashcards
(10 cards)
Test for lithium,sodium and potassium ions
Flame test
* Lithium=bright red
* Sodium=yellow
* Potassium=lilac
Test for calcium,barium and copper ions
Flame test
* Calcium=brick red
* Barium=apple green
* Copper=blue green
Test for sulfate ions
Add barium chloride it should produce barium sulfate which a white precipitate
Test for halide ions
Add silver nitrate which should result in the following percipiates
* White=chloride
* Cream=bromide
* Yellow=iodide
Test for carbonate ions
Add nitric acid and the gas produced turns limewater cloudy
Test for nitrate ions
Add sodium hydroxide then davarda’s alloy and gently heat
The nitrate ions are reduced by aluminium to produce ammonia gas. This turns damp red litmus paper blue
Test for ammonium ions
Add sodium hydroxide and gently heat. Reaction produces ammonia gas which turns damp red litmus paper blue
Test for copper(II), iron(II) and iron(III)
Add sodium hydroxide and a percipitate is seen
* Copper=blue percipitate
* Iron(II)=green percipitate
* Iron(III)=orange/brown percipitate
Test for calcium, magneisum and aluminium
Add sodium hydroxide and a percipiate can be seen
* Calcium=white percipiate
* Magnesium=white percipiate
* Aluminium=white percipiate which dissolves in excess sodium hydroxide
Test for lead ions
Add potassium iodide and a bright yellow percipitate is formed
