Testube Tests Flashcards
(10 cards)
What 2 tests are used for aldehydes?
Fehlings solution
Tollens solution
What are the results for the 2 tests for aldehydes?
Fehlings- Brick red precipitate formed
Tollens- Silver mirror solution
What is the test for Alcohols?
Add acidified potassium dichromate
What is the result when testing for Alcohols?
ACD - colour change from orange to green
What is the test for Alkenes?
Shake with bromine water
What is the result when testing for Alkenes?
Orange colour turns colourless
What is the test for Carboxylic acid?
Add Sodium Bicarbonate (NaHCO3)
What is the result when testing for Carboxylic acid?
CO2 is released
What 3 steps are used to test for Halogenalkanes?
Add NaOH (aq) and warm
Add NHO3 (aq)
Add AgNO3 (aq)
What are the results for the 3 steps when testing for Halogenalkanes?
- Heated NaOH (aq) - hydroxide ion replaces halogen so forms Halide ion (X-) and an Alcohol
- HNO3 (aq) - neutralises excess NaOH
- AgNO3 (aq) - precipitate of AgX formed as has reacted with X-
