Q

Outline the Parica Project in Rondonia

A

1) Aim to develop a 1000km^2 plantation on government owned deforested land
2) Planting 20 million fast-growing hardwood seedling provided by tree nurseries to mature over 25 years
3) Financial assistance given to smallholders for planting, preparation and management

Q

What is the benefits of the Parica Project?

A

Although monoculture, it can sequester CO2 from the atmosphere, (from deforestation) re-establish water and carbon cycle, as well as reducing the run off and loss of plant nutrients

Q

Outline what is done in the scheme the Surui take part in?

A

They aim to protect their tribal lands from deforestation and illegal loggings, as well as restore the rainforest degraded by deforestation in the last 40 years. These seedlings are grown in nearby nurseries and can provide them with timber for construction and through logging, a sustainable source of income

Q

What scheme did the Surui join? and what was the result

A

They joined the UNs REDD scheme, which meant they had to protect the rainforest and abandon logging in exchange for payments. It’s a market-based approach and can provide carbon credits. These can be purchased by international companies who have exceeded their annual emissions quotas. In 2013, Natura, a large cosmetics TNC purchased 120,000 carbon credits from the tribe

Q

Explain how the agricultural technique of diversification works

A

1) Combining livestock, arable operations and rotational cropping to maintain soil fertility
2) This could allow a 5 fold increase in ranching productivity and help slow deforestation
