The arm Flashcards
(21 cards)
What nerves make up the brachial plexus?
C5-T1
What is the function of the anterior compartment of the arm?
Forearm flexion (C5-6)
What nerve supplies the anterior compartment of the arm?
Musculocutaneous
What muscles are found within the anterior compartment of the arm?
Biceps brachii
Coracobrachialis
Brachialis
What is the function of the posterior compartment of the arm?
Forearm extension (C7)
What nerve supplies the posterior compartment of the arm?
Radial
What muscles are found within the posterior compartment of the arm?
Triceps
What are the contents of the antecubital fossa?
Superficial: Median cubital vein
Deep: Radial nerve, brachial artery and median nerve
What is the function of the anterior compartment of the forearm?
Wrist and finger flexion (C7-8)
What nerve supplies the anterior compartment of the forearm?
Mostly median nerve
What muscles are found within the posterior compartment of the arm?
Superficial:
- Pronator teres
- Flexor carpi radialis
- Palmaris longus
- Flexor digitorum superficialis
- Flexor carpi ulnaris (ulnar nerve)
Deep:
- Flexor digitorum profundus (ulnar and median nerve)
- Flexor pollicis longus
- Pronator quadratus
What are the lateral borders of the anatomical snuff box?
Abductor pollicis longus
Extensor pollicis brevis
What is the medial borders of the anatomical snuff box?
Extensor pollicis longus
What is the proximal border of the anatomical snuff box?
Radial styloid process
What is the floor of the anatomical snuffbox?
Scaphoid and trapezium
What is the contents of the anatomical snuffbox?
Radial artery
Cephalic vein
Dorsal cutaneous branch of radial nerve
What are the borders of the carpal tunnel?
Flexor retinaculum
Carpal bones
What are the insertion points of the flexor retinaculum?
Radially: Scaphoid tubercle, ridge of trapezium
Ulna side: Pisiform and hook of hamate
What is the contents of the carpal tunnel?
4 tendons of flexor digitorum profundus
4 tendons of flexor digitorum superficialis
1 tendon of flexor policies longs
Median nerve
What does the median nerve supply?
The LLOAF muscles: Lateral 2 Lumbricals Opponens pollicis Abductor pollicis brevis Flexor pollicis brevis
Why is there thenar sparing in carpal tunnel syndrome?
The palmar cutaneous branch travels superficial to the flexor retinaculum –> spared sensation
