(13 cards)
C. PLINIUS POMPEIO FALCONI SUO S.
Caius Pliny sends greetings to his dear Pompeius Falco.
refugeram in Tuscos, ut omnia ad arbitrium meum facerem.
I had escaped to Tuscany to do everything to my liking.
at hoc ne in Tuscis quidem:
But this was impossible, even in Tuscany:
tam multis undique rusticorum libellis et tam querulis inquietor,
I am harassed by so many complaints from the locals,
quos aliquanto magis invitus quam meos lego - nam et meos invitus.
which I read even more reluctantly than my own- for I also read mine unwillingly
retracto enim actiunculas quasdam,
I am revising some short cases,
quod, post intercapedinem temporis, et frigidum et acerbum est.
which is tedious and painful after a long break.
rationes quasi absente me negleguntur.
My accounts are neglected as if I were absent.
interdum tamen equum conscendo et patrem familiae hactenus ago,
Occasionally, I ride and act as head of the estate,
quod aliquam partem praediorum, sed pro gestatione percurro.
visiting parts of it, though really just for a ride.
tu consuetudinem serva,
Keep up your usual habit,
nobisque sic rusticis urbana acta perscribe.
and send news from the city to those of us who have become so countryfied.
vale.
Goodbye.
