the cardiac cycle Flashcards
(11 cards)
what occurs during diastole?
heart ventricles relax and fill with blood
what occurs during systole?
heart ventricles contract and pump blood into the aorta and pulmonary artery
what are the 5 events during the cardiac cycle?
- passive filling (diastole)
- atrial contraction
- ventricular contraction
- ventricular ejection
- isometric ventricular relaxation
what percent of the ventricles become full from passive filling?
80%
what stage of the cardiac cycle completes the end diastolic volume?
atrial contraction
what causes the first heart sound?
closure of the AV valves due to high pressure in the ventricles
what causes the second heart sound?
closure of the semi lunar valves
what signals the start of systole and diastole?
systole - closure of AV valves
diastole - closure of semi lunar valves
what are the 4 auscultation areas?
aortic - 2nd intercostal space adjacent to the sternum on the right
pulmonary - 2nd intercostal space adjacent to the sternum on the left
tricuspid - 4th intercostal space on the left
mitral - 5th intercostal space mid clavicular line on the left
what does an elevated JVP reflect?
elevated pressure in the right atrium (central venous pressure)
what is a normal JVP
no more than 3 cm vertically above the sternal angle
