Central Nervous System
The Brain
The Spinal Cord
Spinal Reflex
includes the brain and spinal cord, it is protected by bone
command center
handles both incoming and out going messages
simple automatic behaviors that occur without any brain involvement
Somatic
communicates sensory information received by sensory receptors along sensory nerves to the central nervous system
Messages from the brain are communicated down the spinal cord then out to the muscles
Autonomic
regulates involuntary functions such as heartbeat, blood pressure, breathing, digestion
emotions and mental imagery also influence the autonomic nervous system
Sympathetic
bodies emergency system, rapidly activating bodily symptoms to meet emergencies
fight or flight response
pupils dilate
Parasympathetic
conserves and maintains physical resources, calms the body after an emergency
pupils constrict back
