The Characteristics of Life Flashcards
(8 cards)
Metabolism
The sum of all the chemical reactions in an organism
Continuity of Life
Means that living things arise from other living things of the same type.
Life
Living things show all the following characteristics:
- organised into cells
- nutrition
- excretion
- response
- reproduction
Organisation
Cells make up Tissues, which make up Organs, which make up Organ Systems, which make
up Organisms which make up Populations.
Nutrition
Nutrition is the way organisms use food e.g. green plants use light energy to make glucose in
Photosynthesis
Excretion
This is the removal of waste products of metabolism from the body
Response
The way in which all living things react to changes (called stimuli) in their environment or
surroundings. e.g. plant bends towards the light.
Reproduction
This is the production of new individuals. e.g. bacteria reproduce by Binary Fission, yeasts
reproduce by budding.
