The circulatory system Flashcards
What are the circulatory systems main functions?
The circulatory system has three main functions: transport, immunity and homeostasis.
What is it made up of?
It is made up of blood, a system of tubes called blood vessels and the heart (which is needed to pump blood through the blood vessels
What are bloods main functions?
Blood has three major functions: transport, immunity and homeostasis
What is blood made up of?
Blood is made up of plasma and three types of blood cells: red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets
Red blood cells?
Red blood cells are made in bone marrow and contain haemoglobin (which carries oxygen)
White blood cells?
White blood cells are also made in bone marrow and they fight infection
Platelets?
Platelets help to form blood clots to prevent loss of blood and micro-organisms entering the body
Types of blood vessels?
There are three types of blood vessels: arteries, veins and capillaries
Arteries?
carry blood away from the heart (a for artery and a for away)
Veins
carry blood to the heart
Capillaries
tiny blood vessels between arteries and veins, very thin walls to allow materials to pass in and out
The heart ?
The heart is divided into four chambers and acts as a pump to drive blood all over the body
Can you draw and label a heart diagram?
Nyeah or nah
