The Circulatory System & Blood (P1) Flashcards
(14 cards)
What do arteries carry high levels of?
Oxygen
What do veins carry high levels of?
Carbon Dioxide
What part of the heart pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs?
Right Ventricle
What part of the heart pumps oxygenated blood to the body?
Left Ventricle
What part of the heart receives deoxygenated blood from the body?
Right Atrium
What part of the heart receives deoxygenated blood from the body?
Left Atrium
What is the function of plasma?
Carries blood cells, platelets and dissolved substances
How are red blood cells adapted for carrying oxygen
- No nucleus for more haemoglobin
- Bi-concave shape hold more oxygen
- Contains Haemoglobin in cytoplasm which allow oxygen to stick
What can be put in a blood vessel to lower the risk of heart attacks?
Stents (push artery wall out, squashing fatty depos
Give an advantage and disadvantage of stents:
Advantage:
- Effective for long time
- he recovery time from the surgery is relatively quick
Disadvantages:
- Risk of complications during the operation
- Risk of infection from surgery
- Risk of patients developing a blood clot near stent
How would you reduced the amount of LDL cholesterol in arteries?
Statins (a drug that slows the rate of fatty deposits forming)
Give an advantage and disadvantage of statins:
Advantages:
- Reduce the risk of strokes and heart diseases
- Increase the amount of beneficial type of cholesterol
- May also help prevent some other diseases
Disadvantages:
- Long-time drug that must be taken regularly.
- Negative side effects (e.g headaches or worse kidney damage and memory loss)
- The effect of statins is not instant
What is an artificial heart?
A mechanical device that pumps blood for as person whose heart has failed.
Give an advantage and disadvantage of an artificial heart:
Advantage - Less likely to be rejected by the body
Disadvantage:
- Surgery can lead to bleeding or infection
- Parts of the heart could wear out
- Electrical motor could fail
- Blood does not flow as smoothly
- Patients has to take drugs to thin their blood
