Why were there so many riots?
police discrimination they harassed young black men more then keeping ghettos safe
discrimination by white officials-did not respond to complaints about issues about badly-repaired roads
twice as likely to be unemployed
poor quality education
What was the pattern of the riots?
trigger incident often involve police
minor attacks on property
increasing violence and looting
state troops bought into to stop violence
When was the Kerner report set up?
1968
What did the kerner report say?
riots were usually the result of ghettos conditions produced by segregation and discrimination
federal money after riots to improve was give to the police
police made it worse by using violence
Why did King campaign in Watts?
wanted to show non-direct violent action can get you results and then the CCCO asked the SCLC to join them in a non violent campaign for fairer housing they accepted it in 1966
Who was James Bevel and how did he help the campaign for fairer housing?
He was from the SCLC and helped CCCO to organise tenants association to fight the Chicago reals estate board segregated housing and unfair high rents
What did Jesse Jackson do to help the campaign?
from the SCLC helped organise operation Breadbasket(boycotts to pressurise white business to employ black people)
What happened on the 7 Jan 1966?
SCLC officially announced plans for Chicago freedom movement and king went to chicago
What did King do?
called meeting arranged demonstrations but Chicago’s black opposition opposed the campaign
Who was Richard Daley what did he do?
Chicago’s Mayor he used words to negotiate and he said he would support them but he did nothing
Why did the marches that the Chicago freedom movement not go to plan at the time they wanted?
planned marches to provoke a violent response and to gain publicity but before it happened a riot broke out king was abused for not achieving any gains in Chicago
How much support did they gain?
March happened and Daley blamed the SCLC
produced a violent response and the expected publicity but it was far less supportive than it had been to the backlash from white people in the south
What did they achieve at the end of the campaign?
Daley agreed to meet with the Chicago freedom movement nd Chicago real estate board which lead to an agreement of faire housing practices
king and sclc left Chicago once done
Why was the campaign a success?
peaceful demonstrations
agreement of operation breadbasket which was running and it helped black people to find a job in white owned business
Why was the campaign seen as a failure?
violence on both sides and king was not bale to stop the riots that had been broken out before the march
Government did no rush daley to carry out the agreement
What happened when king left Chicago?
Daley ignored the agreement he made with chicago freedom movement and policies did not change
CCCO had warned King this would have happened when he would leave this is why campaign was seen as a failure
When was Martin Luther King assassinated?
4 April 1968
shot whilst standing on the balcony of a motel
he had arrived the day before preparing for a march supporting rubbish collectors and he was planning “Poor People Campaign” on behalf of all the poor not just black
What happened after King Death?
riots in 172 towns 9 april (king funeral) many people were dead and arrested and they caused $45 million worth of damage
Did the poor People Campaign succeed?
integrated group of marches marched to Washington and set up camp there
The campaign failed and SCLC leaders and the protestors argued poured with rain and camp broke up
What did the 1968 Civil Rights act cover?
passed quickly
includes fair housing,covering rental housing and housing sales made after the passing of the act
act gave federal protection to civil rights workers and made punishment for riots worse
Why did support drop?
national civil rights group lost funding and support from white people.From 1965 white public opinion had been less supportive of civil rights and the voter registration act
the northern riots caused a drop in support
What did SNCC change their name to what was a result of this?
In 1969 SNCC changed the “N” to national and lost all its original members resulted to black people becoming more militant and white opposed black equality increasing conflict than agreement
When did Nixon become president/How did he get the support of the whites?
1969
spoke for civil rights
many of the reforms he introduced were sold to the white community as being likely to stop riots
he encouraged black buisness and black home ownership saying people would less likely destroy their own property
What did Nixon do when he was president?
set up funding and training for black people setting up business in black neighbourhoods
made sure there were more black officials in the white house
gave tax breaks to white own business that were set in black neighbourhoods
