The cognitive Approach Flashcards
(8 cards)
Give the main assumption of the cognitive approach.
Should be studied indirectly by making inferences about behaviour.
Outline the two models of the information processing model.
- Theoretic model - features relevant to humans.
- Computer model - features relevant to computers.
Give an example of a theoretical model.
- Multi Store model of memory.
- Working memory model.
Outline the algorithm process of the cognitive approach.
The information is imputed by the surroundings, the information is dealt with and the behaviour is outputted.
Define a schema.
Information held by an individual relating to certain circumstances/places/emotions.
Outline the emergence of cognitive neuroscience.
Labelled by Miller and Gazznaiga and include techniques such as Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scans and Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI)
Give 2 advantages of the cognitive approach.
- Techniques such as PET and fMRI scans have allowed for research in other areas of psychology eg. Tulving with types of long term memory.
- Practical validity PET and fMRI scans and the application of this theory to dating websites.
Give 2 disadvantages of the cognitive approach.
- Naive to metaphorically contrast a complex such as the brain to a lass complexity such as a computer.
- Laboratory experiments - ow ecological validity - low pop. validity - low mundane realism etc.
