The Cognitive Interview - A03 Flashcards
(13 cards)
What is one strength of the CI?
Research into the effectiveness of the cognitive interview.
What is an explanation for the research into the effectiveness of the cognitive interview?
-Meta analysis of 53 studies found on average a 34% increase in the amount of correct information generated from the CI compared to the standard police interview.
What is an evaluation of the research into the effectiveness of the CI?
The research proves that CI is more effective than the standard police interview.
What is a counter argument limitation to the research of the effectiveness of the CI?
The effectiveness of CI may be due to more of individual elements than the whole thing.
What is an explanation for the CA saying that a limitation of CI is the individual elements of the real thing?
-Milne and Bull- interviewed undergraduate students using one component of CI, comparing the responses to a control condition.
-Recall across each of the four individual components was broadly similar and no different from that of the control group.
What is an evaluation point for the limitation stating that CI is only effective because of individual elements?
-When participants were interviewed using a combination of the ‘report everything’ and ‘mental reinstatement’ components of the CI, their recall was significantly higher than in all other conditions.
-Therefore CI may be as much of an improvement as stated.
What is a limiation for the CI?
Quality vs Quantity
What is an explanation for the limitation of quality vs quantity for CI?
-It may be that effectiveness is only because of the quantity.
-Köhnken et al - 81% increase of correct information but also a 61% of incorrect information when CI was compared to a standard interview.
What is an evaluation point for quantity vs quality for CI?
-This means that police need to treat all information collected by CI’s with caution, it may be better but they still need to be careful as it doesn’t guarantee accuracy.
-There may be a lot of questions but doesn’t mean they are good.
What is another limitation for the CI?
Problems with using the CI in practice.
What is an explanation for the limitation of problems with the CI in practice?
-Kebbell and Wagstaff: Police officers suggest that this technique requires more time than is often available.
-They prefer to use deliberate strategies aimed to limit an EW report to the minimum information that is felt necessary.
-CI requires special training.
What can evaluate the problems with using CI in practice?
-CI has not been widespread because of the amount of time and training required to use it.
