Q

The cosmological argument

A

Part of Aquinas’ Summa theologica and his Quinqua Vae ( 5 ways)
It says everything in the world originated from another thing ( contingent), nothing comes from nothing so if there wasn’t a necessary being who is not contingent then nothing would exist- there wouldbe infinite regress. God is this necessary being.

Q

Hume and russels criticisms of Cosmological argument

A

The universe itself could be necessary, Occchams razor. This is the simplest explanation.

The fallacy of composition, what is true of the parts isn’t necessarily true of the whole. Aquinas commits this fallacy. Just because everything I the world is contingent doesn’t mean the entire world or universe is.

Hume argued for the possibility of infinite regress, what caused God?
