What do Christians believe about the Creation?
Christians believe that God created the earth and all living things on it.
The story of creation is found in the first chapter of Old Testament, and the Bible, in Genesis.
The Creation story
The story gives an account as to how the universe was created.
This is believed to have happened in six days, after which on the seventh, God rested.
Quote from Genesis about the Creation:
“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.”
– Genesis 1:1
“Let us make man in our image.”
– Genesis 1:26
The role of the Spirit in Creation
In Genesis 1:2, the Spirit of God is described as “hovering over the waters,” indicating its active presence in creation. The Spirit represents God’s power, bringing life, order and purpose into the world.
The role of the Word in Creation
According to John 1:1-3, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.”
The Word is identified with Jesus Christ and is described as a source of creation, working alongside God the Father and the Holy Spirit.
Why is the Creation important to Christians?
Creation is important to Christians because it shows God’s power and purpose, he created humans in God’s image, and are responsible for caring for his creation.
