The Decay Cycle Flashcards
(5 cards)
1
Q
What are decomposers?
A
The decomposers are a group of microorganisms that include bacteria and fungi.
2
Q
What do decomposers feed on?
A
They feed on waste droppings and dead organisms.
3
Q
Why is decomposition important
(what does it do)?
A
Because they use some of the nutrients to grow and reproduce and release carbon dioxide, water, and minerals ions as waste products, which are beneficial for the plants (photosynthesis).
4
Q
What are detritovores?
A
Detritovores are heterotrophs that obtain nutrients by consuming detritus (decomposing plant and animal parts as well as faeces).
5
Q
What sort of chemical elements are
recycled by decomposers?
A
Dead animals, plants, producer’s waste and their own wastes
