20
Q

Define subduction

A

Subduction is when huge pressure is built up and the heavier plate is pushed under the lighter plate.

21
Q

What 3 things do plates that collide make?

A

Fold mountains
Earthquakes
Volcanoes

22
Q

Define sea - floor spreading

A

When plates move apart from each other and a gap is formed between the 2 plates. Then magma rises out of the mantle to fill the gap. The magma then cools and hardens to form new crust.

23
Q

Plates that separate form…..

A

Volcanic mountains
Volcanic islands
Mid-ocean ridges

25
Q

Example of a volcanic island

26
Where does most volcanic activity happen? What is that area called?
Most volcanic activity happens around the edge of the Pacific Plate. Known as the Pacific Ring of Fire.
27
Volcanic activity creates….
Mid - ocean ridges Volcanic islands Volcanic mountains
28
Hot molten rock aka…
Magma
29
What is the Mid- Atlantic Ridge
….where the American, Eurasian and African plates are separating. Allowing magma to rise up through the cracks and creating a chain of mountains on the seabed.
30
What are volcanic islands?
Mountains on the seabed that are formed when magma wells up through the cracks in the crust, rise above the surface of the ocean.
31
Example of a volcanic island
Iceland
32
Vent
A narrow tube in the crust
33
When magma reaches the surface we call it…..
Lava
34
Crater
Top of the volcano
35
Example of a volcanic mountain
Mount St Helens, USA
36
Three types of volcanoes..
Active Dormant Extinct
37
An example of volcanic activity in Irelands past
Lambay island
38
Define earthquakes
Earthquakes are sudden tremors or vibrations in the Earths crust.
39
What is the focus of an earthquake?
The point beneath the surface where the earthquake happens.
40
What is the epicentre?
The point on the surface directly above the focus.
41
Aftershocks
Smaller tremors that follow an earthquake
42
A location where there are frequent earthquakes.
San Andreas Fault, USA
43
Seismologist
Person who studies earthquakes.
44
Seismograph
An instrument seismologists use to measure tremors in the Earths crust.
45
Richter scale
Used to show the strength of an earthquake.
46
How to reduce damage caused by earthquakes
-Earthquake-resistant buildings -Drills -Early-warning systems
47
How do fold mountains form.
When two plates collide with each other.
48
Example of a fold mountain
The Andes mountains
49
Example of fold mountains
