The Endocrine Pancreas Flashcards
(18 cards)
What are the functions of the pancreas?
Endocrine function
- islets of Langerhans
Exocrine function
- produce digestive enzymes
- acinar cells
What are the hormones secreted by the pancreas?
Insulin Glucagon Somatostatin Pancreatic polypeptide (PP) Ghrelin Gastrin
What are the cell types in the islets?
β-cells α-cells δ-cells PP cells e cells G cells
What hormone do β-cells produce?
Insulin
What hormone do α-cells produce?
Glucagon
What hormone do δ-cells produce?
Somatostatin
What hormone do PP cells produce?
PP
What hormone do e cells produce?
Ghrelin
What hormone do G cells produce?
Gastrin
What hormones regulate glucose?
Insulin
Glucagon
What is the effect of insulin?
Lowers blood glucose levels
What is the effect of glucagon?
Raises blood glucose levels
What is the normal range of blood glucose?
4-8mmol/L
How is insulin synthesised?
- Insulin gene codes for mRNA
- RER
- preproinsulin translation
- signal cleavation
- proinsulin folding - proinsulin transported to golgi
- Golgi
- proinsulin cleaved
- produces insulin + c protein
What regulates insulin secretion?
kATP channels
What are the effects of insulin?
Increases glucose uptake
Increases glycogen synthesis
Inhibits breakdown of fatty acids
How is glucagon synthesised?
Secreted by α-cells - due to low glucose levels
Synthesised in RER
What are the effects of glucagon?
Liver
- increases glycogenolysis
- Stimulates gluconeogenesis
- stimulates lipolysis
