The Endocrine System Flashcards

1
Q

What does the Endocrine System do

A

Instructs glands to release hormones into the bloodstream
Hormones are carried towards target organs
Works alongside the Nervous System to control vital bodily functions

Q

Role of Adrenaline

A

Causes physiological changes in the body
Vital for fight or flight response
Has a strong effect on the cells of the cardiovascular system (stimulates heart rate, contracting blood vessels and dilating air passages)

Q

Describe the Fight or Flight response

A
  1. A stressor occurs
  2. The ANS changes from parasympathetic to sympathetic state
  3. Pituitary gland releases adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH)
  4. ACTH affects the cells in the adrenal glands causing them to release adrenaline
  5. Adrenaline causes physiological changes in the body which creates the arousal necessary for Fight or Flight response
  6. After Fight or Flight the Autonomic nervous system returns the body to the parasympathetic state, acting as a brake and slowing down activities
