The Endocrine System Flashcards
(10 cards)
Function of the Hypothalamus
Region of the forebrain
Supports the autonomous nervous system
Coordinates the pituitary gland - temp, thirst, hunger
Involved in sleep and emotions
Function of the Endocrine system
Works with the regulatory and nervous system
Secretes chemical messages carried in bloodstream to target organs
Secretion of a hormone in response to
Nerve impulse
Releasing hormone
Blood levels
Feedback loops
What do hormones do?
Control emotions and moods
Regulating growth
Regulating metabolism
Controlling tissue functions
What is homeostasis
Maintaining of a constant internal environment
What processes are controlled by homeostasis
Glucose regulation
Blood pressure
Reproductive cycles
Growth
Osmoregulation
What do Exocrine glands do?
Produce fluids such as digestive juices from the pancreas
Secreted onto the surface of tissues
Release fluid via ducts
Lie closer to their target organs
What do Endocrine glands do?
Produce chemicals - hormones
Hormones are then carried by blood
Only affect target organs
Circulating Hormones
Travel in blood to act on the whole body
All known as endocrine
Messages can take a while to reach target cells and often long lasting
Examples - insulin, oestrogen, testosterone, ADH
Locally Acting Hormones
Don’t enter the bloodstream but are released by cells to act on their own tissues or ones nearby
Autocrine group act on nearby cells
Paracrine or Juxtacrine act on nearby cells
Examples - Histamine. gastrin, glucagon
