The endocryne system Flashcards
(31 cards)
ductless glands?
endocrine
duct glands?
exocrine
examples of the endocrine system? (4)
- the pituitary gland
- adrenalin
- estrogen
- ovaries
examples of exocrine system?
- mammary gland
- sweat gland
where is the thyroid located?
on top of the trachea (the windpipe)
what hormone does the thyroid create?
thyroxine
what does the hormone thyroxine affect?
- regulates the rate of metabolism
- excess thyroxine causes hyperactivity
- deficiency causes weight gain and sluggishness
where are the adrenal glands located?
next to the kidneys
what hormone do the adrenal glands create?
adrenaline
what is another name for adrenaline?
epinephrine
what does the hormone adrenaline affect?
- increases heart rate and creating rate
- blood is diverted to the muscles and away from the stomach
- increased respiration to increase the amount of glucose in the blood
what is glucose?
sugar
where are the ovaries located?
in the lower part of the body
how many hormones do the ovaries produce? names?
2
- oestrogen
- progesterone
oestrogen?
- controls the development of female secondary sexual characteristics
- regulates menstrual cycle
progesterone?
- thickens uterine wall
- prevents contraction until a baby is being born
where are the testes in a man?
are outside the body
what hormone do the testes produce?
testosterone
what does the hormone testosterone affect?
-promotes the development of male and secondary sexual characteristics
where is the pancreas located?
- way below the lungs
- below the stomach
what hormone does the pancreas produce?
insulin and glucagon
what does the hormone insulin affect? (4)
- controls the conversion of blood glucose to insoluble glycogen
- increases metabolic rate by stimulating cellular glucose uptake
- increases protein synthesis in some cells
- deficiency causes the condition “sugar diabetes” where the blood sugar level is unregulated
what does the hormone glucagon affect?
controls the conversion of insoluble glycogen to glucose in the liver
what hormones does the pituitary gland produce?
- growth hormone
- antidiuretic hormone
- thyroid stimulating hormone
