The Nervous System(s) Flashcards
(32 cards)
Part of the Central Nervous System?
The brain and the spinal chord
The Peripheral Nervous System?
carries information to and from the CNS – nnerrvveess
Two nerves a part of the PNS?
sensory nerves and motor nerves
sensory nerves?
carries information to the CNS – carry information as electrical impulses from receptors in the sense organs to the CNS receptors
motor nerves?
carries information away from the CNS – carry information away from the CNS in electrical impulses to the effectors – specialised nerve cell z
what are receptors?
they are in the skin – they receive the stimulus
what are effectors?
muscles and glands
what is a stimulus?
anything that triggers a reaction
relay nerves?
the neurons that carry electrical impulses from the sensory nerves to the motor nerves.
where are relay nerves found?
only found in the CNS
how are hormones secreted?
through glands
state the process of transmission to and from the CNS
stimulus – receptors – sensory neurones – relay neurones – motor neurones – effector – response
what are dendrites?
‘collect’ information from other cells
the nucleus?
controls the cell
cell body?
controls the metabolism of the nerve cell
axon?
is a long fibre which carries information away from the cell body, sometimes over long distances
fatty sheath made of myelin
gives electrical insulation between neighbouring cells and makes impulses travel faster
what is the space between two neurones called?
a synapse .
what is the neurone before diffusion called?
the presynaptic membrane
what is the neurone after diffusion called?
the postsynaptic membrane
what is the chemical that diffuses across the synapse?
the neurotransmitter
what is the nerve running down your leg called?
the sciatic nerve
examples of a stimulus?
- food
- light
- heat
cranial reflexes?
use the brain as a relay centre without conscious involvement e.g. blinking your eyes
