(20 cards)
What liquid aids in digestion?
Saliva, - contain electrolytes and digestive enzymes like Amylase and lipase
What is the largest salivary gland?
Parotid
Where is the parotid gland located?
Bilaterally, anterior to the ears and extend inferiorly
What drains the parotid gland?
Stensen duct
What drains the submandibular gland?
Whartons duct
Pathology of the salivary gland: what is sjogren syndrome?
An autoimmune disease that affects all glands that produce moisture; leads to dysfunction of the salivary glands and severe dryness of the eyes, nose, skin, and mouth.
Pathology of the salivary gland: what is sialadenosis?
Benign, painless enlargement of the salivary gland; usually affects both parotid glands
What is sialolithiasis?
Salivary duct stones; most commonly located within the submandibular gland
What is pleomorphic adenoma?
Benign and most frequent tumor of the salivary glands, most commonly seen in the parotid gland. P=P
What is mucoepidermoid carcinoma?
Most common malignancy of the salivary glands; typically starts in the parotid gland
Embryologic development of the thyroid
-Initial development at the base of the tongue
- descends down the thyroglossal duct to ultimately rest anterior to the trachea
What is a pyramidal lobe?
Normal variant of superior extension of the isthmus
What is the medial and lateral vessels in the neck?
Medial = common carotid
Lateral-jugular
What is the fluid in the thyroid called?
Colloid-contains proteins and thyroid hormones
What is goiter?
Broad term that is defined as an enlargement or hyperplastic thyroid gland.
What is the measurement of the isthmus when enlarged?
Greater than 1.0 cm
When is a goiter referred to as multinodular goiter or adenomatous goiter?
When the enlarged thyroid gland contains multiple nodules with cystic and solid components may be referred as multinodular/ adenomatous goiter
What is graves disease?
A hyperthyroidism condition that results from the overproduction of thyroid hormones
What are the clinical findings of graves?
- Budging eyes ( exophthalmos)
- heat intolerance
- nervousness
- weight loss (with increased appetite)
-Hair loss - Tachy, palpitations, high-output heart failure.
- muscle wasting
- fine tremors
- oligomennorhea
- pretibial myxedema
What are the sonographic findings of graves?
- Enlarged gland
- Heterogeneous or diffusely hypoechoic echotexture
- THYROID INFERNO**
