Inspection points on the head
- Hair Distribution and quantity
- Scalp: scaling, nevi
- Skull: size and contour
- Face: expression, contour
- Skin: color, pigmentation, hair distribution, lesions
Palpation Points on the head
- Hair texture
- Skull: lumps
- Face: sinuses
- Skin: texture, temperature
External ear exam inspection points
- Check pinna for size, position, deformity, inflammation, symmetry, nodules, scars or lesions
- Check external auditory canal
- Look for presence of ear discharge: color, consistency, clarity, presence or absence of odor
External ear exam Palpation points
- Check pinna, periauricular area, and mastoid process for tenderness & nodules
- Check pain over the mastoid process
Normal Weber test Results
No sound lateralization, pt hears/feels vibration in the middle
Abnormal Weber Test Results
- Conductive hearing loss = sound lateralization to AFFECTED ear
- Sensorineural hearing loss = sound lateralization to NON-AFFECTED ear
Otoscopic exam: external auditory meatus
- External Auditory meatus: foreign body , cerumen, inflammation, discharge
Otoscopic Exam: TM
- Color: Translucent and pearly grey
- Light reflex: cone of light directed anteriorly and inferiorly
- Landmarks: Pars flaccida, malleus (near center), incus (posterior to malleus)
- Abnormal margins: Clear and tense margins
- Mobility: Brisk, equal movement with positive and negative pressure using pneumatic otoscope
- Shape: Drawn inward slightly at center by handle of malleus
Nasal External Exam Inspection
- Swelling, trauma, deviation, congenital abnormalities

Nasal Internal Exam
- Mucosa: Color, swelling, bleeding, exudate, ulcers, polyps
- Septum: Deviation, inflammation, perforation (snorting cocaine)
- Turbinates: middle and lower
Inspection of Lips
Note color, moisture, lumps, ulcers, cracking,or scaliness
Inspection of Oral mucosa
Note color, ulcers, and nodules
Inspection of gums and teeth
Note color, presence, and position of teeth
Inspection of roof of mouth
Note color
Inspection of tongue and floor of mouth
Note color and texture, ulcers, nodules
Inspection of Pharynx, soft palate, anterior and posterior pillars, uvula, tonsils, and pharynx
Note color, symmetry, presence of exudate, swelling, ulceration, or tonsillar enlargement
Palpation of lymph nodes
- size, shape, delimitation, mobility, consistency, tenderness
- Preauricular, posterior auricular, occipital, tonsillar, submandibular, submental, superficial cervical, posterior cervical, deep cervical chain, supraclavicular
Enlargement of the posterior cervical lymph nodes indicates what?
