Why did Jewish people have a difficult time fleeing Germany to neighboring countries?
because it was hard to get a visa and have the cast raise the necessary funds to leave due to toughened immigration procedures.
What was the St. Louis ocean liner meant to do?
Present an opportunity for the last hope to escape to take jewish refugees from Germany to Cuba where they would wait to get into the USA
Why weren’t the Jewish refugees all allowed to disembark upon reaching Cuba?
Because they would have to wait for their quota number so they could enter, the USA “jews would make good citizens.”
What happened to the St. Louis after it left Cuba?
It had attempted to land in Florida; it was forced to return to Europe, and many people still on board were forced to go to concentration camps.
What was the “Final Solution?”
Hitler has rounded up and sent to extermination camps and killed in gas chambers.
What is genocide?
It means the systematic extermination of a religious or racial group.
List the ways in which Jewish people were killed en route to and in concentration camps
Lack of food and water and the air on the trains and in the camps; they were starved, tortured, etc.
- In crowded trains going to the camps, many died from hunger, sickness, and lack of air.
- In the camps, people were killed in gas chambers.
- Some were shot or beaten by guards.
- Others died from starvation, disease, or being forced to do hard work with little rest or food
What would happen to the bodies of those killed in the gas chambers?
If they had gold fillings, Hitler would save them; their skin was made into lamps, bones were made into fertilizer, and hair was used to stuff mattresses. Buchenwald concentration camp main place this took place.
