The human nervous system Flashcards
(11 cards)
What are the nervous systems within the human nervous system
The central nervous system and e the endocrine system
What is the central nervous system made up of?
The brain and the spinal cord
What is a physical difference between human brains and animal brains?
The cortex is more developed in human brains
What is the brain responsible for within the human nervous system?
It is the centre of awareness
What is the spinal cord for within the human nervous system?
It is responsible for reflexes and transports messages to and from the brain to the peripheral nervous system
What is the peripheral nervous system for?
It sends messages from outside to the central nervous system and brings information from the central nervous system to the muscles
What does the somatic nervous system do?
Receives information from the senses and transmits it to the central nervous system
What does the autonomic nervous system do?
Transmits information to and from the internal body organs involuntarily
What are the two types of nervous system within the autonomic nervous system?
The sympathetic nervous system and the parasympathetic nervous system
What does the sympathetic nervous system do?
Stimulates functions like blood flow (opposite of parasympathetic) and is involved in fight or flight response
What does the parasympathetic nervous system do?
Slows down functions like blood flow (Opposite of sympathetic) and is involved in fight or flight
