The Immune System Flashcards
(14 cards)
What is a disease?
A disease is anything that causes your body to stop working properly
What is bacteria?
Bacteria are microscopic unicellular organisms. Bacteria can be good or bad
What is GOOD bacteria?
Good bacteria can be decomposers, help with digestion, help to control insects, can be used to make medicine and can break down pollutants like oil and plastic.
What is BAD bacteria
Bacteria that cause disease are know as PATHOGENIC BACTERIA or PATHOGENS
What is it called when infectious diseases are spread?
Contagious. To prevent disease from spreading, sometimes you have to quarantine
What treatment is used to fight bacterial infections
Bacterial infections are treated with antibiotics
What is antibiotics?
Antibiotics are substances that kill or prevent the growth of bacteria. They were accidentally discovered in 1928
What are some methods of entry for infections?
- food and water. Eg: food poisoning
- breathing in. Eg: Flu, pneumonia, tuberculosis
- cuts and wounds. Eg: tetanus, blood poisoning
- sexual contact. Eg: Gonorrhoea, syphilis
- other contact. Eg: anthrax, leprosy
What is the first line of defence?
- Skin: an effective barrier
- Fluids: such as tears and saliva have mild antiseptic properties
- hair and mucous in the nose and throat: help to catch dust and harmful substances
- acid: in the stomach
- Diarrhoea: a rapid way of ridding the body of pathogens that have to go past the stomach
What does the first line of defence do?
Prevents pathogens from entering the body
What does the second line of defence do?
Inflammation is triggered, White Blood Cells are activated
What is the second line of defence?
- the affected area becomes red, hot and swollen; inflamed
- inflammation is the response to infection
Damaged cells release a chemical that cause an increase in blood flow to affected area
What is a disease?
A disease is anything that causes your Body to stop working properly
What is one cause for disease?
Bacterial infection
