what is mass media?
ny communication (whether written, broadcast, or spoken) that reaches a large audience
what are alternate mediums of mass media?
advent of the internet and improving technology, popular websites with heavy traffic and social media
what is an advantage of mass media?
being able to keep with the news and occurrences locally and globally; having opportunities for learning and knowledge acquisition; entertainment amongst many others.
how can mass media impact peoples wellbeing?
power and potential to be influential in shaping the way we perceive the world around us, other people and even ourselves
what is the concept of “othering?”
phenomenon in which some individuals or groups are defined and labelled as not fitting in within the perceived norms of the dominant social group
on an individual level how does othering have a role ?
has a role in formation of prejudices against people and groups
what does othering represent?
another person’s individual humanity and value
what are the 2 types of othering ?
1.intentional
2.unintentional
what is stereotyping?
generalised belief set about a particular group of people. It usually comprises of expectations that people might have about every person of that group
what 2 types of stereotypes
unfavourable and favourable e.g. asian people are good at maths
what are high identifiers of stereotyping known as ?
Those who accept a certain stereotype as characteristic of their group are regarded
what are low identifiers of stereotyping known as?
those who do not relate to a certain stereotype , for that specific stereotype

1.When mass media continually overlooks the existence and true narratives of non-white people, it removes these benefits from society as a whole.
2.misinforms the public about ethnic groups; either by attributing false and unfair characteristics to a whole group
3.hinders the resolution of social inequity by maintaining the uneven social power and status of minority ethnic groups, preventing them from ascending the social ladder through institutional and societal bias (whether explicit or implicit) against them
how is the lack culture representation maintained on an individual level?
maintains stereotypes towards ethnic minority individuals which in turn inhibits their ability to express individuality.

1.discrimination

-positions of societal and or political importance for example, rate of unemployment can disproportionately high for Native Americans and African Americans

the state of being deprived of a right or privilege
