The Kidneys Flashcards
(7 cards)
The dark outer region is called the _____
Cortex
The Cortex contains _____ ____ that branch from the _____ ______. It also contains tubes that act as ______ units called _____ ______ or ______.
nephrons, blood vessels, kidney tubules, renal artery, filtering
The ______ run down through the middle layer of the kidney called the ______. This has bulges called ______ pointing inwards towards the concave of the kidney.
tubules, pyramids, medulla
The ______ in the _____ eventually join up and lead to the ____ of these ______, where they empty _____ into a space called the ______. This space connects with the _____, carrying ______ to the ______.
pyramids, bladder, urine, uretter, tubules, medulla, tips, pelvis
The Cortex contains BLOOD VESSELS that branch from the RENAL ARTEY. It also contains tubes that act as FILTERING units called KIDNEY TUBULES or NEPHRONS.
The TUBULES run down through the middle layer of the kidney called the MEDULLA. This has bulges called PYRAMIDS pointing inwards towards the concave of the kidney.
The TUBULES in the MEDULLA eventually join up and lead to the TIPS of these PYRAMIDS, where they empty URINE into a space called the PELVIS. This space connects with the URETTER, carrying URINE to the BLADDER.
Ultrafiltration:
(1) Blood from the _____ artery flows through the ______ ( a bundle of _____ at the start of the ______).
renal, pulmonary, glomerulus, hole, capillaries, veins, nephron

(2) A _____ pressure is built up which squeezes w____, u_____, s_____ and g_____ out of the blood and into the ______ ______.
Bowman’s Capsule, high, low, water, urea, salts, glucose,

(3) The ______ between the ____ _____ in the ______ and the ______ ______ act like ______, so ____ molecules like _____ and blood cells _____ in the blood. The filtered liquid in the Bowman’s Capsule is known as the _______ _____
protein, blood vessels, membranes, filters, glomerulus, Bowman’s Capsule, glomerulus filtrate, big, small, leave, stay
(1) Blood from the RENAL artery flows through the GLOMERULUS ( a bundle of CAPILLARIES at the start of the NEPHRON).

(2) A HIGH pressure is built up which squeezes WATER, UREA, SALTS and GLUCOSE out of the blood and into the BOWMAN’S CAPSULE.

(3) The MEMBRANES between the BLOOD VESSELS in the GLOMERULUS and the BOWMAN’S CAPSULE act like FILTERS, so BIG molecules like PROTEIN and blood cells STAY in the blood. The filtered liquid in the Bowman’s Capsule is known as the GLOMERULUS FILTRATE
What is ADH?
ADH (anti-diuretic hormone) controls the body’s water content, and the concentration of the blood.
When does your body use ADH?
When you are losing a lot of water e.g when sweating a lot and not replacing water lost by drinking.
What is the Hypothalamus?
The Hypothalamus is a region of the brain that detects when the concentration of your blood (water level) starts to increase. It can stimulate thirst.
Where is ADH produced?
The pituitary gland
