The knee Flashcards
(19 cards)
What three bones articulate the knee?
- Femur
- Tibia
- Patella
What joints are there in the knee?
- Tibiofemoral (the knee, hinge)
- Patellofemoral (gliding)
What are the ligaments in the knee?
ACL - back of femur to front of tibia
PCL - Back of tibia to front femur (posterior)
LCL - lateral
MCL - Medial
What is the role of menisci?
- stability
- Lubrication
- shock absorption
what type of bone is the patella?
sesamoid bone
What muscles make up the quadriceps?
- Rectus femoris
- vastus medialis
- Vastus intermedius
- Vastus lateralis
Where do the quadricep muscles all insert?
tibial tuberosity
Where is the origin of the rectus femoris?
Anterior inferior iliac spine
where is the origin of the vastus intermedius?
Anterolateral femur
Where is the origin of the Vastus medialis?
medial side linea aspera
where is the origin of the vastus lateralis?
- Greater trochanter
- lateral linea aspera
What muscles are the hamstrings made of?
- Bicep femoris (long/short head)
- Semimembranosus
- Semitendinosus
Where is the bicep femoris?
- Short head O : Linea aspera
- I : Head of fibula
Where does the semimembranosus insert?
Medial condyle of tibia
Where are the hamstring muscles origin? (except bicep short head)
Ischial tuberosity
Where does the semitendinosus insert?
Anteromedial tibia
What function do the muscles that make up the quadriceps carry out?
Knee extensors
What function do the muscles that form the hamstrings carry out?
Knee flexors (except bicep short head)
What is the Q angle?
Angle between :
- Line drawn from the anterior superior iliac spine to midpoint of patella
- Another Line from tibial tuberosity to midpoint of patella
