Isopraxism (mirroring) gestures:
- creates a favorable impression in the mind of the person you are mirroring;
- The other person will not consciously notice your mirroring behavior because it falls within the human baseline and the brain considers it “normal.”

the absence of mirroring is a foe signal and the brain will take notice when two people are out of synchrony during personal interaction; The person not being mirrored may not be able to specifically articulate why they are uncomfortable, but this foe signal will trigger a defensive response, which discourages attempts at friendship.

Q

Lead-and-follow technique

A
  • When you first meet someone, you’ll want to mirror his or her gestures to establish rapport;
  • Heretofore, you have been mirroring the other person.
  • Now you want to see if they mirror your gestures, signaling rapport:
    1) Change your body position.
    2) If you have established rapport, the other person should mirror you within twenty to thirty seconds.
    3) If not = you have the option of continuing to build rapport, followed by a new lead-and-follow test to see if rapport has been established after your additional efforts have been expended

you are changing your body position by crossing or uncrossing your arms and legs or making some other obvious change in your posture

Foe signal:
- the woman is doing a “fake yawn”;
- However, this signal might not indicate that the young lady is bored with the young man.

You should use an empathic statement to discover the source of her yawn.

Young man is on the losing end of this interaction:
- Man = leans backward, but points a finger (sticking a finger, while leaning backward means he is not in charge);
- Woman = head tilt (artery exposed), so she is not afraid, displays “arms akimbo” => aggresive stance.
