Q

how does air enter the body?

A

•Air enters the body through the mouth and nose and travels down the trachea to the lungs.
•The trachea splits into two bronchi that go into each lung.
•Each bronchus branches out into bronchioles that end in alveoli
•Alveoli are the exchange surface for gases in and out of the body.

Q

how does oxygen diffuse into body cells?

A

•the blood passing next to the alveoli have just returned to the lungs from the rest of the body so it contains lots of carbon dioxide and little oxygen
•oxygen diffuses out of the alveoli ( high concentration) and into the blood (low concentration)
•when the blood reaches body cells oxygen is released from red blood cells (high concentration) and diffuses into body cells (low concentration)

Q

How does carbon dioxide diffuse into the blood to be breathed out?

A

•the blood passing next to the alveoli have just returned to the lungs from the rest of the body so it contains lots of carbon dioxide and little oxygen
•carbon dioxide diffuses out of the blood ( high concentration) and into the alveolus (low concentration) to be breathed out
•As, oxygen is released from red blood cells, carbon dioxide diffuses out of the body cells (high concentration) and diffuses into the blood (low concentration) It is then carried back to the lungs
