The Material world Flashcards
(82 cards)
What is a solution?
A homogeneous mixture where a solute is dissolved in a solvent.
What is the solute?
The substance being dissolved (usually smaller amount).
What is the solvent?
The substance doing the dissolving (usually larger amount, like water).
What are the 3 units of concentration?
- g/L (grams per liter)
- % (grams per 100 mL)
- ppm (parts per million = grams per 1,000,000 mL)
Practice Q: Convert 36g/100mL to g/L.
(36 ÷ 100) × 1000 = 360 g/L
Practice Q: A 4% solution has how many grams of solute in 200 mL?
(4g/100mL) × 200mL = 8g
Practice Q: 2g of salt in 500mL → concentration in g/L?
(2 ÷ 500) × 1000 = 4 g/L
What is the pH scale?
A scale from 0 to 14 that measures the concentration of H⁺ ions in a solution.
pH < 7 means…?
Acid
pH > 7 means…?
Base
pH = 7 means…?
Neutral (pure water)
What are ions?
Charged atoms formed when electrons are gained or lost.
R we gonna pass our exam
FUCK YES
Practice Q: What type of substance is an electrolyte?
A substance that forms ions in water and conducts electricity (like NaCl).
Practice Q: Which has higher conductivity — tap water or distilled water?
Tap water (it contains minerals/ions)
Practice Q: Which will increase conductivity? A) Adding sugar B) Adding salt
B. Adding salt
What is a chemical change?
A change that produces a new substance with different properties.
What are 5 clues of a chemical reaction?
- Colour change
- Temperature change
- Gas production
- Precipitate formed
- Light/sound emitted
What is the law of conservation of mass?
In a chemical reaction, the total mass of reactants = total mass of products.
Practice Q: 23g of Na reacts with 35g of Cl₂. How much NaCl is formed?
23 + 35 = 58g
What is a balanced equation?
An equation where the number of atoms of each element is the same on both sides.
BALANCE: H₂ + O₂ → H₂O
2H₂ + O₂ → 2H₂O
BALANCE: C₃H₈ + O₂ → CO₂ + H₂O
C₃H₈ + 5O₂ → 3CO₂ + 4H₂O
What is combustion?
A reaction where a substance reacts with O₂ to produce CO₂, H₂O, and energy.
