The multi-store model of memory Flashcards
Who came up with the multi-store model?
Richard Atkinson and Richard Shiffrin
Draw the multi-store model
(look in textbook/notes for correct diagram)
What is the role of the sensory register
Where all stimuli from the environment passes into.
It compromised several registers (stores) for each of our five senses:
e.g vision (iconic store) and hearing (echoic store)
What is the coding in the sensory register?
Iconic- visual
Echoic- acoustic
What is the duration of the sensory register?
Less than 0.5 secs
What is the capacity of the sensory register?
Very high- over 100 million cells in one eye each storing data
When will information pass further into the memory system from the sensory register
If you pay attention to the information
How is information coded in the STM store?
acoustically- lasts 18 secs unless it is rehearsed
What is the capacity of the STM
Limited- input prices can only contain a certain number of ‘things’ before forgetting
May be 7+/- 2 (more likely 5)
What is Maintenance rehearsal?
Verbally repeating an item to keep it in memory- if we rehears stuff enough it can pass from STM -> LTM
How is information coded in the LTM?
semantically
What is the duration of the LTM?
Potentially a lifetime
How do we recall information from the LTM?
retrieval from LTM -> STM
Strengths of the MSM
- support from other studies (e.g Baddeley) that show that STM and LTN are separate and independent stores- high concurrent validity
Weaknesses of the MSM
- there is evidence that there are more than one STM and LTM store
- many studies supporting the msm have very low ecological validity (e.g Jacobs)
- does not fully explain how long-term memory storage is achieved
