The Nervous System Flashcards
What is the CNS
what does it stand for and what is it in vertebrates
- Central Nervous System
- in vertebrates (animals with backbones) the brain and the spinal cord only.
- In mammals, the CNS is connected to the body by sensory neurons and motor neuroses
What are Sensory neurones
Carry information as electrical impulses from the receptors to the CNS
What are motor neurones
Carry impulses from the CNS to effectors
What are effectors
Your muscles and glands which respond to nervous impulses
What are receptors
Cells that detect stimuli
What is the CNS
Recieves what and from where
Receives information from the receptors and then coordinates a response.
Pathway for Stimuli
Stimuli—> Receptors—>Sensory Neurone—>CNS—>motor neurone—>effector—> response
What is the function of the nervous system
It allows the body to react to surroundings and coordinate an appropriate response
How does a stimulus lead to a response being carried out by the body
- The stimulus is converted into an electrical impulse by the receptors
- The electrical impulse passes along sensory neurones to the CNS
- The CNS coordinates an appropriate response and an electrical impulse is sent along the motor neurones to the effector, which carries out the response
What sequence of events describes how the nervous system works?
Stimulus—>Receptor—>Coorindator—>effector—> response
