The nervous system Flashcards
(5 cards)
What are the two different nervous systems
1) nervous system made up from the brain and spinal cord
2) periphal nervous system - relays messages from enviroment to CNS through sensory neurones. CNS to effectors through motor neurons
What are the subsystems of the periphal nervous system
1) Autonomic nervous system( involuntery movements)- divides into
2) sympathetic
3) Parasympathetic
4) Somatic nervous sysem ( receives info from sensory receptors
Difference between sympathetic and parasympathetic
Sympathetic
- Prepares body for action
- Increasing heart rate, breathing rate, sweating, pupildilation, vasoconstriction
Parasympathetic
- Returns body to resting state
- decreases heart rate, breathingrate, vasodilation, pupil constriction
How does the fight or flight response happen
1) Body senses stressor in environment
2) this info is carried to the hypothalmus through sensory neurones and receptors where increased activity to sympathetic branch of ANS produced
3) Adrenaline released from the adrenal medulla in adrenal gland, transported to target effectors via blood
4) This causes a greater heart rate, breathing rate, higher salivation
5) Once stressor no longer a threat triggers less activity in sympathetic branch more in parasympathetic branch.
