The nervous system Flashcards
(32 cards)
Draw the nervous system diagram
What are the 2 main parts that the nervous system is split into
the central and peripheral system
What is the CNS split into
the brain and spinal cors
What are the devisions of the brain
-Cerebrum
-Brain stem
-Diencephalon
-Cerebellum
What does the spinal cord do
Relays info from the brain to the rest of the body. Does this by connecting different parts if our body by pairs of nerves. Also performs reflexes without direct involvement
What is the cerebrum
largest part of the brain, divided into 4 lobes
What are the 4 lobes in the cerebrum
frontal, parietal, occipital, temporal
What does is the frontal lobe responsible for
speech and thought
What does is the parietal lobe responsible for
sensory info
What does is the occipital lobe responsible for
visual info
What does is the temporal lobe responsible for
hearing
What connects the 2 hemispheres of the brain
the corpus callosum
What is the cerebellum
motor and balance skills, helping to coordinate muscles.
What happens if someone has abnormalities in their cerebellum?
it could lead to speech and motor problems and epilepsy
What is the diencephalon
split into 2 parts, the thalamus and hypothalamus
Where is the frontal lobe located in the brain
at the front of the brain
Where is the parietal lobe in the brain
top back of the brain
Where is the occipital lobe
at the bottom of the brain
Where is the temporal lobe
At the back of the brain
What does the thalamus do
acts as a relay station in our brain for nerve impulses by routing the impulse to that part if the brain that it is relevant to
What does the hypothalamus do
brains main link to endocrine system. helps regulate bodies temp and feelings of hunger and thirst
What is the brain stem
regulates the automatic functions like breathing, heartbeat, digestion, blinking. Motor +sensory neurons travel through brain stem, connected to SC then to rest of body
Where is the cerebellum
What is the PNS
all the nerves that aren’t part of the CNS are in the PNS. It’s job is to relay impulses to and from the CNS to the rest of the body
